Senate Resolution 71

A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND KENNETH QUINN OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS HONOR AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE GOVERNOR'S ARTS IN EDUCATION AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS.

WHEREAS, as a teacher, Kenneth Quinn has inspired hundreds of students and adults to explore the world of art; and

WHEREAS, during his thirty-year tenure as an educator in the Jackson Public Schools, Mr. Quinn earned the respect of his colleagues and of the community for his untiring efforts to develop arts education for his students; and

WHEREAS, he received the Outstanding Young Educator Award in 1969, and was selected in 1976 as Teacher of the Year by the State of Mississippi Department of Education and the National Association of Secondary School Principals; and

WHEREAS, following his retirement from Jackson Public Schools, Mr. Quinn joined the faculty of Mississippi College, where he continues his instruction of art; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Quinn has staged several one-man shows, including Celebrating the Journey, a 1956-1986 retrospective; and

WHEREAS, he also presented the Kenneth M. Quinn Mississippi Regional Art Collection at Jackson's Municipal Art Gallery, a collection that showcases the works of Mississippi artists; and

WHEREAS, he was honored as the Southeastern Secondary Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association and received the Spirit of Mississippi Award from WLBT Television in Jackson; and

WHEREAS, his most recent work was to illustrate two children's books written by Mississippi author Jo Prather; and

WHEREAS, it is the desire of this Legislature to commend such achievements by one of the citizens of this state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Kenneth Quinn upon the occasion of the honor bestowed upon him as the recipient of the Governor's Arts in Education Award for Excellence in the Arts.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Quinn.
